Getting a job in game dev

Sat Jun 13, 2009, 12:42 PM
Are you looking for a job in the game development industry?

I've collected some useful materials covering this topic - from writing a CV to preparing your portfolio. Among them shines Darius Kazemi's blog, full of interesting articles on IGDA conference, writing a résumé, etc. [link]

1. Résumé
2. Portfolio
3. Cover letter
4. General guides and sites
5. Absolutetly brilliant portfolio examples.
6. Tips for Game Designers

1. Résumé.

One (A4) page long, on which you should mention only the things that are relevant to the job position you're applying for. No elemental schools, no "pizza delivery" work experience. And CLEAN layout - the job recruiter will pick a limited amount of all CVs/résumés before he or she even begins to read them.

--Writing a Resume for a Game Company
"For the love of all things holy, recall that you are applying for a job in game development." / [link]

--CV Writing
"The words you use will obviously depend upon your industry." (check Related Links also) / [link]

--Excellent résumé examples:

2. Portfolio.

An easy to navigate and rapidly loading website, showing the best artworks of yours. Yeah, it's that simple. It looks so at a first glance at least.

--Your Portfolio Repels Your Job
"I look at game artists' portfolios on a regular basis. These websites are usually designed so poorly that I close my browser out of disgust." / [link]

--Creating A Successful Online Portfolio
"Focus on simplicity, ease of use, hitting your objectives, professionally managing the project." / [link]

--Blizzard Entertainment's Tips for Game Artists
"Games are a commercial endeavor, featuring highly polished commercial art. (...) You need to show us you can do the commercial stuff." / [link]

3. Cover Letter.

--How to Write a Cover Letter
"Grab the reader's attention right away - make him or her want to keep reading." / [link]

4. General guides and sites.

How To Break In: "The first thing you should know is just how diverse a game team is. So we've put together this impressive list of Career Paths." / [link]

Blizzard's Documents Submitting Guide: "Remember, this is your opportunity to stand apart from the hundreds of other people who are applying for the same position." / [link]

Game Dev Map: "A living map and catalog of game development organizations." / [link]

5. Absolutetly brilliant portfolio examples.

6. Tips for Game Designers.

--Short Q&A-s with some GDs
"If you're not a programmer or an artist don't fret. You can still get involved in games." / [link]

--The Game Design Portfolio
"Just as an animator may show his or her sketchbook, so too can the game designer show his or her ability in low-tech or no-tech ways. Here's one: Create a board game." / [link]

  • Mood: Sociable
  • Listening to: Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age
  • Reading: Richard Morgan - Black Man (in the USA 'Thirteen')
  • Playing: Street Fighter IV
  • Eating: Tons of strawberries.

Devious Info

  • Current Residence: Poland
  • Tools of the Trade: Blender 3D, XNormal, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter

Can you get Texture to react with lighting in the game engine? If so, can you lead me to a tutorial?
